Troubleshooting: Dimmer Switch Turns Off Right After Being Turned On

Troubleshooting: Dimmer Switch Turns Off Right After Being Turned On

Summary (TLDR)

While the absolute cause is unknown as to this happens on certain bulbs, the way to fix it is to set a maximum brightness level from within your app (or the switch itself). Try setting Parameter 6 to around 80-85%. For Hub specific instructions, please see the links below. If your hub does not support parameter changes, this can also be done from the switch as shown below.

Overview

This article relates to our Gen 2 Dimmer Switches (both Red & Black Series):

The video below shows the problem this KB article is written about, which is when you turn on the switch, it will eventually shut off after a certain amount of time.

SmartThings Instructions

Please follow the below instructions on how to fix this from within SmartThings using the new app.
  1. Install the proper device handler (Black Series Dimmer Instructions, Red Series Dimmer Instructions)
  2. Open up your SmartThings app and select your Inovelli Dimmer
  3. Click on the three vertical dots at the top right of the screen and select, "Settings"
  4. Scroll down to where it says, "Maximum Level" and enter in 80 and click, "Save"
  5. Click on the back button to go back to the device page
  6. Now, test out turning on and off your switch to see if this continues to happen. If so, you may have to go to a lower dim level.

Hubitat Instructions

Please follow the below instructions on how to fix this from within Hubitat's web portal.
  1. Install the proper device driver (Black Series Dimmer InstructionsRed Series Dimmer Instructions)
  2. Open up your Hubitat web portal and login
  3. Click on, "Devices" at the left of the screen
  4. Find your Inovelli device and select it
  5. Scroll down to where it says, "Maximum Level" and enter in 80 and hit, "Enter" (or scroll down and click, "Save Preferences")
  6. Now, test out turning on and off your switch to see if this continues to happen. If so, you may have to go to a lower dim level.

General Instructions

Please use the below instructions to change the max level from the switch itself. Before proceeding, it's important to understand the logic behind setting the parameter values:
  1. Yellow Color Bar = Switch Parameter
  2. Purple Color Bar = Parameter Values
  3. Short Blinks = 1 increment
  4. Long Blinks = 10 increments
In this example, we need to edit the Max Value Parameter, which on the switch is #3. So, the Yellow bar will short blink 3x. Then we'll set the parameter value to 80 so the bar will long blink 8x. Here's how we'll do that:
  1. Hold down the configuration button (top right) for 10 seconds, until the LED bar turns Yellow and release (it will fast blink 1x)
  2. Next, tap the config button three (3) times and the LED bar will now fast blink three (3) times
  3. Hold down the top of the paddle for approximately 18 seconds (See Note Below) to start with the max level at 99% (LED bar should slow blink 9x and then fast blink 9x)
  4. The max level is now set to 99% -- let's work our way backwards
  5. Hold down on the paddle for 6 seconds and release -- the LED Bar should now slow blink 7x and fast blink 9x for a value of 79
  6. Tap up 1x on the paddle to get to a value of 80 (LED Bar should slow blink 8x)
  7. Hold down on the configuration button (top right) for 10 seconds, until the LED bar turns Yellow and release -- it will blink Cyan to confirm
Please note the value of 80 is what we recommend, however you can adjust up or down based on your preference or what solves the shut-off issue.
