Installation & Setup | LZW31 | Dimmer - Black Series (Gen 2) | SmartThings

NOTE: If you are pairing this device to work directly with an Ilumin RGBW or CCT Smart Bulb via Z-Wave Association, you will need to pair this in S0 mode.

Abbreviated Instructions for Pairing

In the SmartThings App, click on the (+) button, then "Device", then Scan QR Code (located at the bottom left of your switch). Next, click, "Start", select your hub and room where you'd like your switch to show up and click, "Next". Finally, press the config button 3x until it pulses blue. Once complete, the LED bar should flash GREEN if successful and you'll be taken to a screen where you can rename the switch. NOTE: Sometimes it will make you scan the QR Code again (please do so) or it will say something like, "Not all Security Features Implemented" -- you can either ignore this (switch will be paired with S0 Encryption) or try pairing closer to the hub (to get S2 Encryption). Our recommendation would be to leave it at S0 for now until ST has S2 fully implemented.

Overview

This article will walk you through how to setup your Inovelli Dimmer Switch (Black Series) from an in-wall installation to pairing it to your Samsung SmartThings Hub. For more advanced features such as Parameter Configuration, Device Handler Installation, please see the recommended articles below.

Prerequisites

  1. Wiring:  Have an understanding on how to identify the Line (Hot), Load, Neutral and Ground wires.
  2. Placement: Ensure the switch will be within distance using the Z-Wave Signal Strength Detector
  3. Tools: Multimeter, Phillips Screwdriver, Needle-Nose Pliers (Optional), Wire Stripper (Optional)
  4. Switch Overview: Understand the basics of the switch, such as the Config Button (A), LED Bar (B), and Line/Load/Neutral/Traveler Terminals as shown in the Spec Sheet - Getting to Know Your Switch section
If you are unsure how to determine the various wires, please consult an electrician or post in our community in the dedicated Wiring Discussion section. We are unable to give electrical advice due to liability concerns.

Switch Installation

The first step is to review the terminology below to understand what kind of setup you have currently and then determine the setup you'd like to create.

Terminology

  1. Line: This is where your power (120V AC) comes from and is considered your, "Hot" wire. Usually a black wire.
  2. Load: This is what your switch controls (ie: your light). Usually a black wire.
  3. Neutral: Completes your circuit (and is what powers your Z-Wave chip). Usually a white wire.
  4. Traveler (Optional): This is used in a 3-Way or Multi-Switch setup. Usually a red wire.
  5. Single Pole: One switch that controls your Load
  6. 3-Way: Two switches that control your Load
  7. 4-Way: Three switches that control your Load

Understanding Your Setup

Now that you understand the terminology, it's time to understand what setup you have, and what setup you'd like to create. Here are the questions you should ask yourself before looking at the schematics.
  1. Do I have a neutral wire (if the answer is no, you'll need to purchase our LZW31 or LZW31-SN Dimmer Switches)
  2. How many switches control my Load?
  3. Do I want to leave my dumb/existing switch in or replace it with an Auxiliary Switch?
Once these questions have been answered, look at the Wiring Guide and prepare for installation.

Installing Your Switch

After reviewing the Wiring Guide and determining your setup, it's time to install your switch. Again, if you don't know what you're doing, please don't try this on your own and consult an electrician. We cannot give out electrical advice due to liability reasons.
  1. Carefully pull your existing switch out from the wall to determine where the Line and Load wires are located and keep note
    1. NOTE: In a 3-Way, 4-Way or Multi-Switch setting, the Inovelli switch needs to be installed where the Line wire is located
  2. Go to the circuit breaker and turn off power to the switch
  3. Remove the wires from the existing switch and follow the Wiring Guide Schematics
  4. Make sure the wires are tightly secured before finalizing the installation as loose wires will cause problems
  5. Carefully finish installing the switch into the wall (NOTE: Do not put the faceplate on yet as you'll want to scan the QR Code)
  6. Restore power and test your switch for manual operation -- you should see a boot sequence like this when first powered on (Red, Green, Blue):

Adding to SmartThings

As of February 23, 2020, SmartThings is transitioning its users to the new SmartThings App and the Classic App will be phased out. Therefore our instructions will only be available for the new app.

Z-Wave Range Detection (Optional)

This step is optional, but it will allow you to understand if your switch is within range of your SmartThings Z-Wave antenna.
  1. Hold down the Configuration Button (A) for five (5) seconds until the LED Bar (B) lights up GREEN
  2. Once it lights up GREEN, release the Configuration Button (A)
  3. If the LED Bar (B) stays GREEN, the device is within range
  4. If the LED Bar (B) turns RED, the device is not within range and needs to be moved
NOTE: Sometimes the LED bar lights up RED and the switch is within range. While rare, this has been reported on some of the switches. If you're confident your switch is within range, please proceed to the, "Pairing (Inclusion) Steps" below.
For optimal performance and to access all the advanced features, you'll want to install our custom device handler. We recommend you do this first, but you can definitely do it after you pair your switch. We wanted to keep this article short, so we've created a separate page for installing the handler. It can be found here: LZW31 Device Handler Instructions

Pairing (Inclusion) Steps - S2 Encryption (QR Code)

NOTE: The below directions assume you have installed the device handler prior to pairing and do not want to associate to an Ilumin Z-Wave bulb. If you do want to associate the switch to an Ilumin bulb, please click here: Pairing in S0 Mode.
  1. Open your SmartThings App
  2. Press the (+) button at the top right of the screen
  3. Click on, "Device"
  4. Click, "Scan QR Code" at the top right of the screen
  5. Scan the QR Code at the bottom left of your switch (faceplate should be off)
  6. SmartThings should start the inclusion process - click, "Next" and select your hub and room and then click, "Next" again
  7. On your Inovelli switch, press the Config Button (A) 3x rapidly and the LED Bar (B) will pulse BLUE (if it doesn't, please tap the config button faster)
  8. If successful, your Inovelli switch LED Bar (B) will turn GREEN (if unsuccessful, the LED Bar will turn RED)

  9. In addition, your app will show a device called, "Inovelli LZW31 Dimmer" -- feel free to rename it
  10. Click back to the main devices tab and look for your switch!

Pairing (Inclusion) Steps - S0 Encryption (Use for Z-Wave Associations)

Excluding (Factory Resetting) the Switch

Sometimes the switch will not pair and needs to be factory reset. There are a couple of ways to do this. The first is via the switch itself, while the second is via the SmartThings App.

Resetting via the Switch
  1. Hold down the Config Button (A) for 20 Seconds or until it turns/blinks RED
Resetting via the SmartThings App
  1. From the home screen, click on the three lines at the top left of your screen to open the menu
  2. Click on the, "Devices" icon
  3. In the search bar, search, "Hub" and select your Hub
  4. Click on the three dots at the top right of the screen and select, "Z-Wave Utilities"
  5. Then press, "Z-Wave Exclusion" and the process will start
  6. On your Inovelli Switch, press the config button 3x rapidly (the LED bar should pulse blue)
  7. If the exclusion was successful, your Inovelli switch LED bar should turn from pulsing blue to GREEN
  8. In addition, the SmartThings app should say that your switch was excluded successfully
