Wiring Diagrams for Gen 2 Dimmer Switches
These wiring diagrams should only be used for our Gen 2 dimmer switches, which are shown below -- do not use these for Gen 1!
Pre-Requisites
- Neutral Wire is NOT Required (But Recommended)
- Inovelli switch needs to be installed where the Line (120V) is located
- Do not use an illuminated dumb switch as your secondary switch
- Max wattage: See below -- maximum will vary based on bulb type and whether the heat sink tabs are removed or not
- Heat Sink Tabs Not Removed: 400W Incandescent, 300W LED, 150W CFL
- One (1) Side Heat Sink Tabs Removed: 300W Incandescent, 200W LED, 150W CFL
- Two (2) Sides Heat Sink Tabs Removed: 200W Incandescent, 150W LED, 100W CFL
- Min Wattage: If neutral wire is used, there is no minimum wattage required. However, if no neutral is installed, there needs to be at least 25W for the switch to work
- Inductive Load (fans): Not for use with fans
Warning
Not all wire colors shown may be the same as what's in your box. While we've tried our best to match the most common setups, local electrical codes may be different than what's depicted. If your wire colors do not match, please use a multi-meter to check for continuity, hire an electrician or
post in our community where someone can help. Again, we are unable to give specific wiring advice ourselves due to liability issues.
Neutral Wire Setup
Please use the below setups if you have a neutral wire available. If you do not have a neutral wire available, please go to the
Non-Neutral Wire Setup below.
Single-Pole Installation (2-Way)
Please see below for wiring diagrams for a single pole setup with a neutral wire.
3-Way Installations
Three way installs are when you have two switches controlling one load. Please see below for the various configurations. Note: You can use this switch with an existing (dumb) switch or a special auxiliary (add-on) switch made by GE or HomeSeer. In some cases you can use two Inovelli smart switches (please note the
limitations before installing).
IMPORTANT PLEASE READ: If you've installed a Zooz or Inovelli Gen 1 switch, please make sure you re-wire the dumb/existing side. Our Gen 2 uses different logic (traveler detection vs neutral wire detection) so if you don't re-wire the dumb/existing side to the diagrams below, it will blow out the switch.
3-Way Installation (Using a Dumb / Existing Switch)
Please see below for Inovelli wiring diagrams for a 3-Way (two switches controlling one load). This assumes you are using a dumb / existing switch as your secondary switch with a neutral wire (required). In addition, please do not use an illuminated switch for your secondary switch. PLEASE REMEMBER TO PROGRAM THE SWITCH FOR IT TO WORK PROPERLY (located in the instructions).
3-Way Installation (Using an Auxiliary / Add-On Switch)
Please see below for Inovelli wiring diagrams for a 3-Way (two switches controlling one load). This assumes you are using an auxiliary / add-on switch as your secondary switch with a neutral wire. PLEASE REMEMBER TO PROGRAM THE SWITCH FOR IT TO WORK PROPERLY (located in the instructions).
As of now, these auxiliary switches are the only ones supported:
- GE Enbrighten Add-On #12723
- GE Enbrighten Add-On #46199
- HomeSeer Add-On #HS-WA100+
3-Way Installation (Using Two Inovelli Switches)
Please see below for Inovelli wiring diagrams for a 3-Way (two switches controlling one load). This assumes you are using two Inovelli switches in your 3-Way setup with a neutral wire (required).
4-Way Installations
Four way installs are when you have three switches controlling one load. Please see below for the various configurations. Note: You can use this switch with existing (dumb) switches or a special auxiliary (add-on) switches made by GE or HomeSeer. In some cases you can use three Inovelli smart switches (please note the
limitations before installing).
4-Way Installation (Using a Dumb / Existing Switch)
Please see below for Inovelli wiring diagrams for a 4-Way (three switches controlling one load).
4-Way Installation (Using an Auxiliary / Add-On Switch)
Please see below for Inovelli wiring diagrams for a 4-Way (three switches controlling one load).

4-Way Installation (Using Three Inovelli Switches)
Please see below for Inovelli wiring diagrams for a 4-Way (three switches controlling one load). This assumes you are using three Inovelli switches in your 4-Way setup with a neutral wire (required).
LIMITATIONS: While it's possible to connect three smart switches, there are limitations. Please read about them in this article:
Multi-Switch Limitations
Non-Neutral Wire Setup
Please use the below setups if you do not have a neutral wire available. If you do have a neutral wire available, please go to the Neutral Wire Setup above. There are limitations when you do not use a neutral wire (or don't have one available) and they are as follows:
- No Dumb/Existing Switch Option: You will have to use an auxiliary / add-on switch made by GE or HomeSeer (links in the aux section)
- No Energy Monitoring: The switch will not be able to use energy monitoring
- 25W Minimum load required: If your load is under 25W, a bypass is required
Single-Pole Installation (2-Way)
Please see below for wiring diagrams for a single pole setup in a non-neutral setting.
- Remember, the load (light fixture) should be 25W or more. If it's less, you'll need to purchase a bypass and install it at the light.
3-Way Installations
Three way installs are when you have two switches controlling one load. Please see below for the various configurations. Note: You can only use this switch with a special auxiliary (add-on) switch made by GE or HomeSeer if you do not have a neutral wire. You cannot use this switch with an existing dumb switch or another smart switch without a neutral.
3-Way Installation (Using an Auxiliary / Add-On Switch)
Please see below for Inovelli wiring diagrams for a 3-Way (two switches controlling one load). This assumes you are using an auxiliary / add-on switch as your secondary switch and no neutral is used. PLEASE REMEMBER TO PROGRAM THE SWITCH FOR IT TO WORK PROPERLY (located in the instructions).
- Remember, the load (light fixture) should be 25W or more. If it's less, you'll need to purchase a bypass and install it at the light.
