How To: Fit Multiple Switches in a Gang-Box

Summary (TLDR)

When you install multiple switches in a gang-box, you'll need to remove the heat sink tabs on the side. This can be easily done by grabbing a pair of needle-nose pliers, putting them parallel to the tabs (do not do it perpendicular), wiggling them back and forth until the heat sink tab falls off. Keep in mind that if you do this on a dimmer switch, your maximum wattage will drop.

How to Remove the Tabs

Grab some needle-nose pliers and watch the video below!

Consequences of Removing the Tabs

There are no consequences for removing the tabs on the On/Off switches. However, please note that the maximum wattage will decrease on the Dimmer switches if you remove them. Please see the below specs for both the Red and Black Series Dimmer switches:
  1. Max Wattage: See below -- maximum will vary based on bulb type and whether the heat sink tabs are removed or not
    1. Heat Sink Tabs Not Removed: 400W Incandescent, 300W LED, 150W CFL
    2. One (1) Side Heat Sink Tabs Removed: 300W Incandescent, 200W LED, 150W CFL
    3. Two (2) Sides Heat Sink Tabs Removed: 200W Incandescent, 150W LED, 100W CFL
